+ What is sea glass?
Have you ever walked along the seashore and found beautiful smooth pieces of colorful glass? That is sea glass! Sea glass is the result of glass items ( bottles, plates, decorative art glass) that become broken and discarded into the ocean. These glass pieces undergo a process where the PH levels of the water hydrate the surface of the glass, which then allows the surface of the glass to break down and smooth over time. Over the course of 50-100 years of constant exposure to the rolling motion of the waves and the hydration of the salt water the sea glass slowly becomes smooth.
**Fun Fact: The shape of the sea glass and the smoothness to its edges, can often help give you an idea of its age. Here’s how it works; When glass breaks, it most often breaks in a straight line, which forms a triangle. If that triangle piece of sea glass tumbles in the ocean for long enough it will eventually wear down and transform into an “egg” shape or “oval” shape. This can often times take over 100 years depending on the thickness of the glass. So the shape of the glass can help you determine if it’s an older or newer piece of sea glass. Plus, the smoother the edges the older the sea glass!
+ Do you use real sea glass?
YES! All of the sea glass that we use is genuine, authentic beach found (not lake found) sea glass. We source our sea glass from collectors and beaches around the world to bring you the most beautiful quality and colors available!
+ Where do you get your sea glass?
When we first started in business (2002) we collected most of our sea glass by ourselves here in Massachusetts with the help of our family and friends. As our company grew we quickly realized that we could not find or search for what we needed to fill our orders and sustain our company. So we began establishing relationships with collectors all over the world to source and collect the quantity and colors we needed. Different colors are more easily available in different areas depending on the bottle sources in that location. Through clients, businesses relationships and friends of friends we now work with 6 collectors around the world to get the most desirable sea glass colors for our jewelry.
Here is where most of our sea glass is sourced:
Massachusetts: White, Lavender, Green, Amber, occasionally an aqua or blue!
West Coast: Pastels ( pink, lavender, seafoam, yellow, white, light blue, olive & Davenport glass.
Puerto Rico: Cobalt, Cornflower, Red, Turquoise.
Japan: Aqua, Seafoam, Sea Glass Marbles.
Russia: Purple, Pink, Orange, Red, Patterned Glass & Unique Colors
England: Ultra Rare Sea Glass ( also called English Multies) from Seaham
+ How should I care for my sea glass jewelry?
Please see care instructions under our Jewelry Care page: HERE.
+ Why do some sea glass colors cost more than others?
The rarity of the sea glass color, the size or thickness of the glass can all affect the price of the sea glass. Colors like red or orange sea glass are so rare that one out of every 5,000 pieces found are red. Limited supply or collectable pieces like the davenport glass or the ultra rare sea glass also have a higher cost with our collectors due to rarity. All of these are factored into the price.
